No
A friend texted me last week and said I should try saying no to some things.
Nailed it.
It’s a constant struggle for me, even in retirement.
I was reminded of a video I saw years ago with Andy Stanley. He shared from Nehemiah 6:3.
To summarize, Nehemiah was called by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. It was a big task and he was focused on the job, but some guys wanted to distract him, to slow him down or maybe even stop him.
One day he was on a ladder hard at work laying block (my interpretation) and the guys sent an invitation for Nehemiah to come meet with them.
What did he say to them?
“I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?”
(Nehemiah 6:3, ESV)
I picture him with a trowel in one hand and he’s holding on to the ladder with the other hand, and the guys below just won’t shut up and Nehemiah looks down and says, sorry…I am focused on this project and I don’t have the bandwidth or interest in adding anything else to my plate.
When distractions, criticism, or even “good” opportunities come along that would derail your main mission, you can remind yourself: Stay on the wall. Finish the work.

WOW, perfect timing for sure. It is truly hard to say "NO" especially when it appears to be a very good opportunity. This is why it is so very important for us as believers to be in constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit. If we are truly in the word and fellowship with the Lord each day He clearly says: He will direct our steps! Great reminder Bill. Thanks
Nehemiah, one of my favorites books. Such an important lesson to be applied. I don’t enjoy saying “no,” but over the years it has become easier. The only way is with the Lord. Asking Him first- “What is my focus today?”
Thank you, Bill. Good Monday morning.
