Monday Misc.
—I got an email the other day giving me advice on how to grow my Substack subscriber base. The email suggested I should tout:
Who it's for
What they’ll get
How it benefits them
At which point I laughed as I realized this little corner of Substack is for nobody and everybody, and has little to no benefit…other than perhaps making you feel good about yourself because you don’t have to live in my head as I do.
It’s kind of like a Seinfeld episode, but with no theme or point. You’re just glad Kramer doesn’t live across the hall.
—Two Milestones to report:
I now have a granddaughter!! Beautiful Collette Sammons arrived July 2nd. Her nickname is Cookie, and I get to meet her in three weeks. Nick and Rachel are the proud parents, and I suspect the frequency of our trips to California are about to increase.
Last week I mentioned I was considering getting into real estate video on a part time basis. Part of that requires me to be licensed to fly my drone. The FAA lets hobbyists fly without a license but if you are flying for commercial purposes you have to take a test and become certified. I took an online course and passed the test, so I’m ready to get flying! It’s not as exciting as having a granddaughter, but it’s something.
—Speaking of video production, I was trying to figure out the pricing structure for the real estate videos last week when I remembered an axiom we used when I did video production full time. It went like this:
“Do you want it Good, Fast, or Cheap? Pick two.”
In other words, you can have it fast and good, but you’re going to pay extra.
Or you can have it cheap and fast, but it won’t be very good.
Or you can have it cheap and good, but you’re not a priority.
That probably applies to just about every industry. Not sure who coined it, but it’s brilliant.
—Finally, I read that the meteorologist who devised the Wind Chill Factor has died. He was 86, but he felt like 75.
Have a great week!

Congratulations on your new blessing and for passing the test.
Congratulations
